Building Power Through Organizing: District 78 Hosts Member Training Session

IAM District 78 recently hosted a dynamic Organizing training session at the district 78 office, on Friday April 17, 2026. It was led by the vibrant, spirited Organizer, Rootisha Rampat Sukhu. The charismatic Territorial Organizing Leader Scott Jackson, was also present to give key information to the participants. Another facilitator was Organizer, Roy Bhansingh who provided additional information to the group present. The session brought together a diverse group of union members, including Personal Support Workers (PSWs), stewards, and other local leaders, all committed to strengthening their knowledge and skills in workplace organizing.

The training focused on the core principles of organizing and the critical role it plays in building collective power. Participants explored how strong member engagement can lead to meaningful improvements in wages, working conditions, job security, and overall fairness in the workplace—while ensuring workers have a unified and powerful voice.

A key highlight of the session was the role of member organizers. Attendees learned how to effectively engage coworkers, build trust-based relationships, and support ongoing union campaigns. The session reinforced that organizing is not a one-time effort, but a continuous process driven by informed and active members.

The training also provided an overview of important legal protections under the Ontario Labour Relations Act, emphasizing workers’ rights to organize free from intimidation or retaliation. Participants gained a clear understanding of the certification process, including signing union cards, applying for certification, and participating in a secret ballot vote—essential steps in forming a union.

Overall, the session underscored that knowledge, solidarity, and active participation are the foundation of a strong and resilient union. District 78 remains committed to equipping members with the tools they need to organize effectively and advocate for positive change in their workplaces.

Thank you to all that participated in this instructive and enriching session.
